My Biome: Amazon Tropical Rainforest
This essay will be about an amazing biome, but before I get there I will define the word biome. A biome is a large region that has surplus amount of plants and animals. Do not get confused between a biome and an ecosystem because they are not the same thing. An ecosystem is small compared to a biome because an ecosystem can be small as a puddle. So now you know what a biome is and the difference between a biome and an ecosystem, to start my essay I will introduce you to my biome. It is a tropical rainforest and is the amazing Amazon tropical rainforest. The Amazon is located in South America and is in nine nations! These nations are Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The yearly rainfall is 120 inches and that is 10 feet. In the daytime the temperature in the Amazon is around 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and in the nighttime the temperature is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Now I will talk about the biotic factors of the Amazon tropical rainforest, but I will explain the definition of the word biotic to you before I start. A biotic is a living thing such as trees and people that help their habitat or biome in a way. For example, an animal provides carbon dioxide for the plants of the Amazon. These biotic factors must have the 6 characteristics of life which are: 1. Living things respond and adapt to change in their surroundings. 2. Living things reproduce. 3. Living things have DNA. 4. Living things use energy. 5. Living things grow, develop, and die. 6. Living things have cells. So I will list 4 biotic factors in the Amazon tropical rainforest: Kapok tree, killer bees, monkeys, and heliconia. Kapok trees are biotic factors because they provide oxygen for the animals in the Amazon. Killer bees or honeybees drink nectar from flowers and transport pollen to other plants to help them grow. Monkeys eat nuts and fruits and their waste contains the seeds and they help reproduce more of the fruit or plant. Heliconia provides insects like bees and butterflies with pollen and nectar and even a base for a spider web. All these organisms are biotic because they are living things and are not inanimate objects and help their biome in a specific way.
Next I will talk about abiotic factors, but I will first tell you the definition of the word abiotic. The word abiotic means non-living, but helps their environment in a way. For example, weather can be an abiotic factor because it isn't living but provides a temperature for animals to adapt and grow. 5 abiotic factors in the Amazon are water, air, sunlight, soil, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Rain is an abiotic factor because it provides a drink for animals and it provides water for plants. Air is an abiotic factor because it helps transport small seeds to different locations to grow in. Sunlight provides light for plants and it provides heat and warmth for animals or even wet animals to dry up and evaporates water. Soil provides a place for plants to grow in and shelter for animals(i.e., groundhogs and gophers). Oxygen provides animals to breathe and live. Carbon dioxide provides plants to live. These organism are abiotic factors because they are non-living and help their biome.
Some producers(plants) in the Amazon tropical rainforest are orchids and trumpet trees. They are producers because they are plants and create their own energy using the Sun. They are also at the bottom of the food chain after the Sun. Some primary consumers(herbivores or omnivores) in the Amazon are monkeys, tapirs, and ants. They are all primary consumers because monkeys, tapirs, and ants eat producers to get energy. They are also omnivores or herbivores. Some secondary consumers(carnivores) are boa constrictors, anteaters, and spiders. These organisms are carnivores and they only eat meat. They are usually at the top of the food chain if there are no tertiary consumers. They eat the primary consumers for energy. Some tertiary consumers in the Amazon are cougars, leopards, tigers, and even in some occasions snakes. Some decomposers in the Amazon are worms and cup fungus. These organisms are decomposers because they break down dead matter and create nutrients for the environment. They also ONLY eat dead matter and are very important because they create nutrients for the plants.
I hope you like my essay so that the next time you go to South America and are in either in the nation of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Suriname, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, and French Guiana, you will go see the Amazon tropical rainforest in person. But before you leave I will tell you some interesting facts about the Amazon. It is that if the Amazon was to be a country itself it would rank ninth in size. Another one is that 10% of the world's organisms live there. Finally, the loudest animal in the Amazon is the toucan! This is an amazing biome and that is the reason we should protect it because research shows that if 3 degrees of the climate there is increased, 75% Amazon would be killed! Another reason is that the Amazon is beautiful and there is so much diversity there and it would be disappointing if they are all dead. I would like my children to see the tropical rainforest and so would you for other children. The Amazon is already in trouble, I will list some endangered animals in the Amazon to you. There are jaguars, orangutans, poison dart frogs, gorillas, and golden lion tamarian monkeys.
